Salesforce Crushes 'SaaSpocalypse' Fears with Strong Q2 Results
Salesforce shares surged more than 13% in after-hours trading on August 26, following the company's fiscal second quarter results that exceeded expectations. CEO Marc Benioff described the 'SaaSpocalypse' narrative as 'such nonsense,' and argued that AI agents rely on customer relationship management systems rather than replace them.
The company reported revenue of $11.35 billion for the quarter, up 11% from a year earlier and above the expected $11.32 billion. Net income rose to $3.53 billion, or $4.29 a share, with a notable $2.6 billion gain tied to Salesforce's Anthropic stake.
A key metric was Agentforce's annual recurring revenue (ARR), which exceeded $1.5 billion, up more than 240% from a year earlier. Data 360 also contributed significantly, handling nearly 104 trillion records in the quarter, including 82 trillion through Zero Copy, up 731%. These numbers demonstrate that AI agents rely on data and software infrastructure provided by Salesforce.
The market had been bearish going into earnings, with investors expecting a disappointing report. However, Benioff's argument that AI companies are increasingly relying on Salesforce and Slack platforms was supported by the data, as nine of the top 10 AI companies use these platforms, with spending up 435% year-over-year.
