Samoa Recycling Program Pays Residents to Keep Plastic Waste Out

A community-led recycling initiative in Samoa is not only helping to reduce waste but also providing a financial boost for local residents. The 'Return and Pay' program, held in front of the Government Building, has seen significant participation from Upolu residents bringing in recyclable items such as plastic bottles and aluminum cans.

Laulii grandmother Gaupule Saufoi is one of those benefiting from the program, earning $166 at the latest event after making $222 the previous month. According to Saufoi, 'It benefits the environment and it gives back to the people.'

The 16th Return and Pay event was a partnership between Coca-Cola Europacific Partners and the Samoa and Tokelau Association of Recyclers (STAR). The collected plastic is processed and sent overseas to New Zealand and Australia.

STAR President Nancy Vito-Aletosia emphasized that the initiative focuses on both recycling and giving back to the community. 'This is not only about recycling, but also giving back to the people,' she said.
