San Francisco Activist Steve Carroll Leaves Lasting Legacy

Steve Carroll was a writer, human rights champion, and philanthropist who passed away in his Oakmont home after a two-year battle with cancer. Born in 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah, Steve grew up in Montana before attending the University of Montana, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

After working for IBM, Steve moved to San Francisco and met his husband, Chuck Maisel, with whom he would spend 44 years. The couple's careers spanned politics and human rights, with Steve working for Senator Barbara Boxer and Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey.

Steve and Chuck also worked as freelance writers and filmmakers, creating exhibits and experiences for museums across the United States, Canada, Asia, and Europe. Their legacy extends to their endowment to LGBTQI students at Sonoma State University.
