Sanofi Cuts 229 Jobs After $9.1B Acquisition
Sanofi, the French pharmaceutical giant, has begun scaling back its operations in Massachusetts following the $9.1 billion acquisition of Blueprint Medicines last year. The company is cutting 229 jobs and closing two sites in Cambridge, marking the first major workforce reduction under new CEO Belén Garijo.
The job cuts were disclosed in a WARN notice filed in Massachusetts and are part of Sanofi's efforts to integrate Blueprint's operations into its own business. The acquisition was one of the largest in Sanofi's history, with the company paying $9.1 billion for Blueprint's portfolio of cancer treatments.
Sanofi is not alone in reducing headcount in its US R&D operations, as Merck KGaA is also cutting jobs in the region. The move highlights the challenges faced by large pharmaceutical companies in integrating acquired businesses and adapting to changing market conditions.
