Santa Barbara Unified Sues Social Media Giants Over Mental Health Impact
The Santa Barbara Unified School District has joined over 1,500 school districts nationwide in filing a lawsuit against social media companies Meta, Google, TikTok, and Snapchat. The suit alleges that these platforms intentionally design addictive features that harm minors' mental health.
The lawsuit claims that the social media companies are negligent and have created public nuisances by exploiting young people's vulnerability to addiction. As a result, schools across the country are seeing increased costs for mental health services, straining budgets nationwide.
Santa Barbara Unified is seeking financial compensation from these companies for the added expenses of providing mental health services. The district is also asking for injunctive relief to force the platforms to change their design and operation for children's safety.
