Seattle Times Sues OpenAI, Microsoft Over Alleged Copyright Infringement in AI Training
The Seattle Times and Newsday have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging copyright infringement for using their journalism to train AI systems.
The complaint claims that the companies scraped articles from the newspapers' websites, including those behind paywalls, and incorporated them into products such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot.
The publishers argue that AI-generated answers can reproduce or closely paraphrase their reporting while reducing the need for readers to visit their websites or pay for subscriptions.
