Secret Deodorant Buys 9,000 Tickets for Women's Pro Soccer Games
Procter & Gamble's Secret deodorant brand is buying 9,000 tickets to National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) games this season in an effort to boost attendance and promote women's equality. This move follows a $529,000 donation made by Secret in July to members of the U.S. Women's National Soccer team, highlighting the pay gap between men's and women's professional soccer players.
The 9,000 tickets will be purchased for home games at each of the nine stadiums of league teams, with 1,000 tickets allocated to each stadium. The first ticket buy is set to occur tomorrow for the North Carolina Courage in Cary, North Carolina, while the last one adds 1,000 fans to the Portland Thorns FC game in Oregon.
The P&G-bought tickets will be offered to women's organizations and sports teams and leagues to encourage support of women's sports. Secret's associate brand director, Sara Saunders, stated that the effort is 'Secret's way of showing support to ensure that female athletes have a platform to play and get the attention they deserve.'
The NWSL has seen an increase in attendance this season, with average crowds running 19% ahead of last year. The league is considering expansion in 2020, and ESPN will show a total of 14 NWSL games this season.
