Seinfeld Reveals How He Convinced AmEx to Create Exclusive Black Card

Jerry Seinfeld has added another layer to his infamous story about the creation of American Express' Centurion Card, also known as the Black Card. According to Seinfeld, a crew member on set asked him if he owned one during filming for an AmEx commercial in the 1990s.

Seinfeld claimed that he didn't know what it was but thought it was time he did, so he called the president of American Express at the time, Harvey Golub. He allegedly told Golub that he wanted a Black Card, and Golub replied that it only existed in rumor.

Seinfeld convinced Golub to create the card, saying 'Let's do it, let's make the Black Card.' This was in 1999. The comedian claimed that he was the first person to be gifted one, but then threw it out.
