Silicon Valley Researchers Sound Alarm on Existential AI Threat
A growing safety debate is reaching Silicon Valley's biggest labs after a former Google DeepMind researcher issued an extreme warning about advanced artificial intelligence.
Bilal Chughtai, who worked on artificial general intelligence safety and alignment at Google DeepMind before leaving in July, said increasingly powerful AI systems could pose an existential risk.
'I recently resigned from Google DeepMind, where I worked on AGI safety and alignment research,' Chughtai wrote. 'I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome.'
This warning follows similar comments from researchers at Anthropic, with Jacob Coxon saying people building AI believe it could 'kill us all by the end of the decade'.
