The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and IBM are collaborating to establish a Quantum-Safe Centre at SIT's campus in Punggol Digital District. The centre will serve as a testing ground for local enterprises and government agencies to prepare for the security threats posed by quantum computing.

According to Michael Osborne, chief technology officer of IBM Quantum Safe, preparing for the post-quantum era requires more than just new cryptographic standards, it also demands organisations understand their current security posture, identify vulnerabilities, and have a clear path forward. To address this challenge, SIT and IBM will roll out two continuing education courses later this year.

The first course is a one-day executive track for senior business leaders, board members, and chief information security officers, which will cover the strategic implications of post-quantum cryptography, including governance and regulatory hurdles to migration planning. A three-day foundation programme will target cyber security practitioners, software developers, engineers, and IT professionals, providing hands-on training in cryptographic discovery and compliance.

IBM's Quantum Safe centre is part of its ongoing efforts in Singapore, which include helping StarHub strengthen the telco's quantum-safe readiness and preparing the Singapore Armed Forces' Digital and Intelligence Service for migration to post-quantum cryptography standards. SIT president Chua Kee Chaing notes that the challenge is not just technical but also about workforce readiness.
