Singapore Restaurant Misunderstands Beverage Container Return Scheme

A customer at Dim Sum Place in North Bridge Road was surprised to see a $0.10 charge on his bill for a can of Coca-Cola Zero.

The customer, who wished to remain anonymous, took issue with this practice and questioned the restaurant staff about it.

According to the customer, the staff explained that the 10-cent deposit was part of the Beverage Container Return Scheme (BCRS) and that customers were responsible for returning the cans to a 'Return Right' machine to claim their deposit.

The BCRS scheme is designed to encourage recycling by charging a small deposit on certain beverage containers, which can be redeemed at designated machines.

However, it appears that Dim Sum Place may have misinterpreted the guidelines, as participating restaurants are supposed to handle the return of the containers themselves, not pass the responsibility onto customers.
