Sinn Féin Open to Pathways Review Amid Citizenship Changes
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has expressed openness to reviewing pathways to Irish citizenship. She spoke during her party's annual think-in in Malahide, where they discussed priorities for the new Dáil term.
The proposed changes to the requirements for Irish citizenship include increasing the residency period from five to eight years and introducing a language test to ensure proficiency in English, Irish, or Irish Sign Language. McDonald stated that her party has 'no objection' to having a structured pathway to achieving citizenship.
Sinn Féin is open to reviewing pathways to citizenship as long as they are fair and reasonable. McDonald emphasized the importance of integration into the community and knowledge of Gaeilge or English. However, she clarified that this was not where her party would prioritize their efforts.
