Small Business Retirement Crisis Threatens $5 Trillion in Enterprise Value

JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon has been warning about the American Dream slipping out of reach for millions. Now his bank is putting a dollar figure on one reason why: a retirement tsunami among small-business owners.

A survey by Chase in May 2026 found that 40% of these owners plan to retire within the next decade, but only 8% are fully prepared to hand off their businesses.

JPMorgan estimates that six million small and medium-sized businesses will face ownership transitions by 2035, driven largely by baby boomer retirements. This could put as much as $5 trillion in enterprise value at risk.

In response, JPMorgan launched the 'American Dream Initiative' with an $80 billion commitment to small-business lending over the next decade. The program also aims to grow Chase's client base and hire additional bankers to mentor entrepreneurs.
