Snowflake and Microsoft Unveil Interoperable Lakehouse Solution

A new approach to data management is emerging as companies struggle to cope with increasing data volumes and AI workloads. In response, Snowflake has partnered with Microsoft to develop a fully interoperable, open lakehouse using Apache Iceberg.

The goal of this partnership is to create an open, governed data foundation that allows both Snowflake and Microsoft Fabric engines to operate on the same datasets without duplicating data or setting up complex pipelines. This approach uses Iceberg tables in OneLake to enable seamless querying across both platforms.

A hands-on workshop has been designed to teach developers how to build this open lakehouse by integrating Snowflake, Microsoft OneLake, and Apache Iceberg. The workshop covers creating an external volume and setting up OneLake as a catalog-linked database in Snowflake, as well as using sample data in Fabric.
