Sony Considers Delaying End of Physical Discs for New PlayStation Games
Reports suggest that Sony may delay its plan to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games. The original deadline was set for January 2028, but an unverified rumor claims that the company might push this date back by one or two years.
The reason behind this potential delay is linked to Microsoft's plans for its next Xbox console, Project Helix. According to a Eurogamer Spain podcast, publishers are discussing Microsoft's alleged strategy of making the next Xbox console '100% physical' while still allowing players to convert supported discs into digital entitlements.
Sony has not confirmed any changes to its original plan, but Microsoft has announced that it will be introducing a disc-to-digital feature for Xbox Insiders starting on August 31, 2026. This feature allows eligible owners to claim a digital entitlement for supported physical games, but it is separate from Project Helix's hardware details.
The decision to delay or maintain the original plan is likely influenced by the debate over physical and digital releases. Physical games can be more expensive to produce, while digital releases give platform owners greater control.
