Sony Ditches Discs, Microsoft Tames Cloud Gaming

Sony has announced that new PlayStation games will no longer be produced on physical discs from January 2028. This change reflects shifting consumer preferences, with digital distribution now significantly ahead of physical media.

The company is not completely shutting down disc production, however. Existing games released before the cutoff can still have physical copies made, and publishers can reorder discs for qualifying releases after the deadline.

This decision has generated concern among collectors and preservation advocates, who argue that physical games offer unique benefits such as resale value, lending to friends, and collecting special editions.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is introducing monthly limits on cloud gaming for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Starting in November 2026, Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of cloud gaming time per month, while Premium subscribers will get 10 hours, and Essential subscribers will have 5 hours.

Subscribers who use up their allocated time can purchase additional cloud gaming time through the Xbox Store.
