South Carolina Recognizes Boeing 787 Dreamliner's Economic Impact
South Carolina has officially recognized the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's significance to its economy by declaring August 7, 2026 as 'Boeing 787 Dreamliner Day'. The proclamation was made by Governor Henry McMaster, who highlighted the aircraft's impact on the state's aerospace sector. Since the program began in April 2004 with a record order from All Nippon Airways, the 787 has become the fastest-selling and bestselling twin-aisle passenger airplane in the world, with nearly 2,500 orders placed by over 90 customers.
Boeing employs more than 9,000 people in South Carolina and has contributed approximately $1.9 billion to the state's economy since its inception. The company operates a campus in North Charleston, which serves as the home for the full Boeing 787 Dreamliner production cycle. In addition to this facility, Boeing also operates Fabrication South Carolina Aerostructures (FSCA) in Orangeburg, supporting manufacturing for multiple programs.
Boeing has invested more than $135 million in nonprofit organizations across South Carolina since 2010, focusing on initiatives such as conservation, education, arts and culture, workforce development, health and human services, and community strengthening. The company's commitment to the state was further solidified with a $1 billion investment announcement in December 2024, which includes plans to create 500 new jobs over the next five years.
