Southwest Airlines Tests Loyalty to Boeing Amid Quality-Control Issues

Southwest Airlines has been flying Boeing-only for over four decades, but it almost didn't. The carrier began exploring alternative options with Airbus due to quality-control issues and delivery uncertainties from Boeing.

The airline's loyalty was tested when the Boeing 737 MAX crisis unfolded in 2018-2020, including two fatal crashes, grounding of the aircraft, and a COVID-19 pandemic-induced halt on all flights. The crisis led Southwest to consider switching to Airbus' A220-300 for point-to-point routes.

However, after weighing the pros and cons, Southwest ultimately decided to remain loyal to Boeing due to several factors. One reason was its long-standing reputation for flying the 737, which streamlines operations, reduces maintenance costs, and allows for economies of scale.
