SpaceX Ditches AMD for Nvidia in Ambitious AI Push
SpaceX's decision to build its AI infrastructure exclusively with Nvidia has sent shockwaves through the tech industry. During the company's first earnings call as a public company, CEO Elon Musk revealed that SpaceX will use Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform for all of its AI projects.
Musk praised Nvidia's platform as 'the best AI computer' and said that the company would be building exclusively with Nvidia from now on. This decision marks a significant shift from SpaceX's earlier plans to use both Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chips for its AI projects.
The partnership between SpaceX and Nvidia will support the company's new 'Starmind' project, which aims to place AI computing systems in orbit using Starlink satellites. The first Starmind satellites are expected to launch in 2027 and will be powered by Nvidia's space-certified Space-1 Vera Rubin module.
While this decision may have hurt AMD's stock price, the company is still seeing growth in its AI business. AMD reported Q2 revenue of $11.5 billion and adjusted EPS of $1.66, both above Wall Street expectations. The company continues to expand its AI customer base with customers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta.
