SpaceX Leases Computing Capacity Amid AI Power Crunch
Elon Musk's SpaceX has become a crucial player in the rapidly growing AI industry due to its vertical integration approach, which allows it to move faster than grid-dependent rivals. In a recent video appearance at the G20 Innovation Ministerial Summit, Musk warned leaders that the AI power crunch is here and that companies are leasing computing capacity from SpaceX amid tightening power supplies.
Musk emphasized that bringing large AI data centers online requires more than just chips; it also demands massive power plants, transformers, liquid cooling loops, and chillers, as well as incredibly complex networking for training clusters. He noted that Google and Anthropic are among the companies leasing compute from SpaceX due to these challenges.
SpaceX's strategy has become a major business opportunity for the company. In June, Google signed a multiyear cloud agreement worth $920 million per month at full scale for access to roughly 110,000 Nvidia GPUs. This deal follows an expanded Anthropic pact, under which the AI developer agreed to pay $1.25 billion monthly through May 2029 for computing capacity.
The electricity crunch extends beyond SpaceX, with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimating that U.S. data centers could consume 11.8% of national electricity by 2030, ranging from 9.5% to 15.3% in different scenarios.
