SPEEA Rejects Recommended Contract Offer from Boeing
The Bargaining Unit Councils (BUCs) of SPEEA have dealt a blow to negotiators by rejecting the recommended contract offer from Boeing. The council's decision comes after both negotiation teams had praised the tentative agreement and its collaborative tone. Despite some benefits, including wage pools compounding to 29.4% over four years, guaranteed minimum wage increases tied to inflation, and improvements in health and dental benefits, members have expressed dissatisfaction with certain provisions.
The Prof BUC vote did not meet the 60% threshold to issue a recommendation, while the Tech BUC voted to recommend members reject the offer. The council's decisions are seen as a warning sign for Boeing, which has faced similar contract rejections in the past. In the IAM 751 and IAM District 837 negotiations, Boeing made multiple offers before members ultimately walked out.
Union leaders have expressed confidence that the new contract addresses many of the longstanding issues affecting members, but some seem to disagree. The BUCs' decisions are likely to be a major factor in the upcoming vote, which is expected to take place by August 21st.
