Starliner Soars Again: Boeing Seizes Opportunity Amid SpaceX Scrutiny

Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spacecraft has been on an extraordinary journey since its first crewed flight in June 2024. During that mission, thruster failures put astronauts Barry 'Butch' Wilmore and Sunita 'Suni' Williams in a precarious situation as they attempted to dock with the International Space Station.

The incident was so severe that NASA officials decided it was too risky for the crew to fly back on Starliner, opting instead for an autonomous return to Earth. This meant that what was supposed to be an eight-day excursion turned into a 286-day space odyssey for the two astronauts, who eventually had to hitch a ride aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule.

Starliner's troubles have been well-documented, and the spacecraft has become synonymous with Boeing's quality lapses. The company has faced criticism over its inability to control costs, which have ballooned to $2.02 billion on a contract initially valued at $4.2 billion.

However, it appears that Starliner may be poised for a comeback. With SpaceX's plans coming under scrutiny, Boeing sees an opportunity to play a greater role in the US government's Low Earth Orbit ambitions into the 2030s. To make this happen, however, the company must convince NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman that it has finally addressed the propulsion system failures that led to the Starliner's temporary loss of control.
