Steam Deck's Performance Matches Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti in Specific Games

The Steam Deck's custom AMD GPU is powerful enough to match an Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, but its performance varies depending on the game. When Digital Foundry reviewed the Steam Deck, they concluded that the device's GPU is comparable to a GTX 1050 Ti, albeit with a lower resolution of 720p instead of the standard 1080p.

The main issue holding back the Steam Deck's GPU is its power supply, which can only deliver up to 15 watts. Despite this limitation, the device's RDNA architecture makes up for it and outperforms older graphics cards. However, when paired against newer GPUs playing more recent games, the Steam Deck's low-watt design isn't as reliable.

Another challenge is the operating system, which runs on a heavily modified version of Linux called SteamOS. This requires a compatibility layer (Proton) to run most PC games, and even then, performance varies depending on game optimization. If a title uses the Vulkan API, it might run as fast as or faster than on Windows, making an 'equivalent Nvidia GPU' more powerful.

It's worth considering that newer GPUs are vastly superior to the GTX 1050 Ti and can be bought for relatively low prices. For example, the HP Victus laptop comes with a GeForce RTX 2050 Laptop GPU, which outperforms the Steam Deck in every benchmark. At $765 on Amazon, it's cheaper than the 512 GB OLED model of the Steam Deck.
