Stem Cell Miracle: Lifelong Strangers Reunite at Disney World

Abby Hudak's life was forever changed when she received a stem cell transplant from an anonymous donor at just 30 years old. The lifelong athlete had been experiencing unusual symptoms, including shortness of breath and night sweats, before being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Hudak underwent treatment immediately, but doctors soon determined that a stem cell transplant would be her best chance at a cure. Months later, she learned that a stranger had been identified as her match - Lewis Haggerty, a 28-year-old male from Scotland who had signed up to donate through the National Marrow Donor Program years earlier.

After undergoing health checks and donating stem cells in 2023, Haggerty remained anonymous to Hudak for two years. It wasn't until later that they were able to connect, first through messages and then a video call. Finally, about three years after the donation, they met in person at Walt Disney World.

Hudak and Haggerty spent several days together with their partners, bonding over shared interests and laughter. They even ran a 5K together during a runDisney event - an idea Hudak had envisioned even before they met. For both of them, the experience was emotional and surreal, as they realized that their connection went far beyond just being donor and recipient.
