Stocks Edge Higher on Fed's Clear Inflation Message
The stock market is trading higher on August 28, driven by investor confidence in the Federal Reserve's commitment to reducing inflation. In his Jackson Hole debut, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh emphasized his resolve to tackle sticky inflation without directly stating a rate hike. This message has given traders reassurance that he will act if necessary.
Economists now believe there is a nearly 60% chance of a rate hike in September, following the clear message from Warsh. The S&P 500 index is up 0.20% to 7,747, while the Nasdaq Composite has gained 0.14% to 26,561 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.17% to 53,658.
The gold price has slipped 1.63% to $4,535.27, and the 10-Year Treasury yield is up 0.04% to 4.70%. Communication services stocks are leading sector gains, while industrials and healthcare stocks are trading lower.
Some notable stock movements include Elastic's surge of over 18%, following its quarterly earnings release, which echoed yesterday's gain by Salesforce. Affirm Holdings also advanced this morning, but Marvell Technology sank more than 9% despite an earnings beat, and Rubrik fell 11%. These moves suggest that artificial intelligence does not necessarily spell doom for software stocks.
