The most popular option is portable gasoline-powered units, available for under $1,000 at stores like Home Depot and Lowe's. But experts warn that these units are often too small for larger homes and may not power essential appliances like central air conditioning.
Whole-house standby generators, on the other hand, start automatically when a storm hits and can cost between $5,000 to over $10,000 installed. They run on natural gas or propane, making them a more reliable option for powering entire homes.
