Stowers Institute, Google DeepMind Unveil Groundbreaking AI-Powered Resource for Human Genome Research
The Stowers Institute for Medical Research has partnered with Google DeepMind and other leading research institutions to develop a new AI-powered resource called AlphaGenome Atlas. This comprehensive map of over 9 billion possible single-letter DNA changes will help scientists quickly prioritize and interpret variants that may influence biology and disease.
The one-petabyte dataset contains artificial intelligence-generated predictions for the molecular effects of these changes, creating what Google DeepMind describes as the most extensive catalogue of its kind. The AlphaGenome Atlas is a powerful example of how AI can expand human knowledge and advance scientific discovery, according to Pushmeet Kohli, VP Science at Google Cloud.
Julia Zeitlinger, Ph.D., an Investigator at the Stowers Institute, led the development of the resource in collaboration with Google DeepMind. She helped connect the predictions to biological processes that give cells their identities and allow them to function.
The Atlas does not replace laboratory research but can help scientists determine which variants and biological mechanisms should be investigated first, focusing experimental time and resources on the most promising questions.
