Streaming Giants Unite Against Regulatory Pressure
The streaming giants Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube have formed a coalition to advocate for technology-neutral entertainment policies. The Streaming Access and Choice Alliance will be led by TechNet, a major tech industry trade association. The new alliance aims to safeguard digital platforms' ability to invest in live sports events and other programming options.
The formation of the alliance comes as Washington regulators increase scrutiny over how sports leagues license their broadcasting packages. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr has publicly raised questions regarding the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, examining whether long-standing antitrust exemptions have improperly incentivized sports leagues to transition games off free over-the-air television and behind subscription paywalls.
The alliance marks a shift in tech policy representation, as Netflix, Amazon, and Google were previously key participants in the Internet Association, which disbanded in 2021 due to diverging policy objectives. The Streaming Access and Choice Alliance will aim to shape federal entertainment policy and ensure that future oversight does not impose legacy broadcasting regulations or impede digital platforms' ability to secure exclusive streaming rights.
