Strumpshaw Fen Marks 50 Years as Norfolk Nature Reserve

RSPB Strumpshaw Fen in Norfolk is celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of England's most popular nature reserves. The reserve covers 450 hectares of diverse wetland, equivalent to 630 football pitches.

The site has become a key stronghold for several threatened bird species, including the Bittern, Crane, Lapwing, and Redshank. Conservation efforts have also helped preserve the Swallowtail butterfly by nurturing its caterpillar's preferred food source, Milk Parsley.

The RSPB first acquired land at Strumpshaw Fen in the mid-1970s, with a visitor hub opening in 1981. Since then, thousands of visitors have explored the reserve's various habitats, including wet woodland, fen, reedbeds, and meadow.
