Super Micro Staffers Detained in AI Server Export Investigation
Taiwanese prosecutors have detained four staff members at Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s (SMCI) Taiwan unit as part of an investigation into the alleged illegal export of advanced AI servers containing Nvidia chips.
The U.S. indicted Super Micro co-founder Yih-Shyan 'Wally' Liaw and two individuals linked to the company for violating U.S. export controls in March, which prohibit the export of such technology to China.
Super Micro distanced itself from the controversy, removing Liaw and stating it had no role to play in the alleged wrongdoing.
Despite this, Super Micro's stock took a beating at the time, with shares declining 45% from their recent high on June 2. The company has since placed the four employees on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.
