Supreme Court Ruling Against Trump Tariffs Could Trigger $175 Billion Refund

A recent Supreme Court ruling has the potential to trigger up to $175 billion in refunds for U.S. businesses due to tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). This could become a significant tailwind for import-heavy retailers, including companies like Walmart (WMT), Costco (COST), and Target (TGT).

The ruling found that President Donald Trump's broad tariffs exceeded the authority granted by Congress. Economists at the Penn Wharton Budget Model estimate U.S. businesses could receive as much as $175 billion in tariff refunds if this ruling ultimately stands.

Import-heavy retailers import billions of dollars' worth of merchandise every year, and these tariffs increased costs across the board. A refund would effectively put some of that money back on their balance sheets, strengthening free cash flow, improving profit margins, funding share repurchases, paying down debt, or supporting new investments.
