Surging Stocks Boost Hopes for Easier Fed Policy
US stocks surged on Friday after the government reported that employers unexpectedly cut 23,000 jobs in August. This unexpected drop in employment numbers raised hopes for easier monetary policy from the Federal Reserve.
The S&P 500 rose 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 97 points, or 0.2%. The Nasdaq composite jumped 1% as technology stocks led the market's gains. Nvidia and Broadcom were among the top performers in this sector.
The weaker-than-expected jobs report sent Treasury yields lower. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.65%, while the two-year Treasury yield dropped to 4.20%. These movements suggest that investors are anticipating a more dovish stance from the Fed, which could lead to interest rate cuts.
However, not everyone is optimistic about the jobs market. Peter Graf, chief investment officer at Amova Asset Management Americas, warned that 'investors should be wary of the future growth potential of an economy where fewer people are working.'
