SWISS Flight Dives into Unplanned Stopover Amidst Onboard Odor

A SWISS Boeing 777-300ER flight from Chicago to Zurich made an unplanned stopover in the Azores, a Portuguese archipelago, due to an onboard odor that caused health concerns for passengers and crew.

The flight, LX9, was traveling overnight when it diverted to Lajes Airport on Terceira Island. Upon arrival, five passengers and one crew member underwent medical examinations for symptoms such as eye irritation, nausea, or headaches.

SWISS sent a replacement aircraft from Zurich to pick up the stranded passengers, which is expected to arrive at Lajes around 4:00 PM local time. The original flight was scheduled to depart Chicago at 7:05 PM and arrive in Zurich at 10:50 AM the next day.

The diversion caused significant delays and cancellations for SWISS flights, including LX8 from Zurich to Chicago, which had to be canceled due to the redeployment of the replacement aircraft.
