Swiss Quantum Hub Launches with IBM's Latest Quantum Computing Tech
A joint effort between IBM and Lockheed Martin will bring a cutting-edge quantum computing innovation center to Switzerland, specifically at ETH Zurich's Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano. This strategic partnership has been formalized through an arrangement with armasuisse, the Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement.
The centerpiece of this installation will be Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two, featuring the IBM Quantum Nighthawk processor, which is the company's most advanced quantum chip currently available. Researchers and institutions will gain access to this system through ETH Zurich, with cloud-based access provided earlier than its physical availability in late 2026.
The facility will focus on applications such as chemistry, materials science, optimization problems, and financial services innovations. Two collaborative research projects have been outlined: quantum sensing technology for navigational purposes and advanced additive manufacturing techniques for metallic alloy production. IBM has pledged over $10 billion toward quantum research initiatives across the next five years.
