Switzerland Gains World-Class Quantum Computing Hub Thanks to IBM and Lockheed Martin Partnership
IBM and Lockheed Martin have teamed up to launch a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. This collaboration aims to advance research and development in the field of quantum computing, with a focus on applications in industries such as chemistry, materials science, optimization, and financial services.
The hub will be powered by an IBM Quantum System Two, which will be operated by IBM and made available over the cloud. ETH Zurich will provide expertise, resources, and technologies to support the development of new algorithms, technical breakthroughs, and industrial use cases.
Dr. Craig Martell, Lockheed Martin's vice president and chief technology officer, stated that this project extends the strategic relationship between Lockheed Martin and IBM in quantum and AI while positioning Switzerland as a leader in these critical fields. Alessandro Curioni, vice president of Algorithms and Applications at IBM Research, emphasized the opportunity to put world-class quantum hardware, software, and expertise directly into the hands of Swiss academic institutions and industries.
The collaboration also includes joint development projects between IBM and Lockheed Martin, such as exploring quantum sensing applications for navigation and improving additive manufacturing of metallic alloys. Additionally, ETH Zurich will provide access to the IBM Quantum Network and IBM Quantum Platform learning offerings, including coursework, certifications, and workshops, to support workforce development and education in the field.
