Switzerland Prepares Backup Workplace Amid Microsoft 365 Fears

The Swiss federal administration has announced plans to build a sovereign workplace environment that will run in parallel with Microsoft 365. This decision comes after they finished rolling out the new Office suite to roughly 54,000 seats in mid-December 2025.

The first phase of this project targets about 3,000 employees and is estimated to cost CHF 9 million. It is set to go live starting at the end of 2027.

This move aims to strengthen digital sovereignty and ensure that the administration can keep functioning during a crisis. The new environment will not replace Microsoft 365 but rather serve as a backup in case the platform becomes unusable.
