Tableau Executive Warns Unchecked AI Agents Create Technical Debt
Matthew Miller, vice president of product management for Salesforce's Tableau unit, warned that the proliferation of AI agents is creating 'technical debt' for companies. Technical debt refers to the cost of maintaining and updating software systems over time.
In a survey released by Anthropic in March, the most common concern among respondents was errors caused by hallucination, when AI misinterprets data or fabricates information that doesn't exist. Miller emphasized that Tableau's deterministic AI technology avoids this issue, providing consistent answers to user queries.
Tableau uses tokens only once, during the initial building of dashboards and reports, which makes it more cost-effective than relying on AI agents. Miller also highlighted the importance of standardizing tacit data knowledge through a 'semantics' system that enables accurate analysis across different departments and industries.
