Taiwan Charges Nine Over Illicit AI Server Exports to China
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged nine individuals, including one from Nvidia and two from Super Micro, for illegally exporting high-end AI servers to mainland China. The move is the latest development in the ongoing rivalry between China and the United States over AI infrastructure.
The servers involved were graphics processing units known as 'B300', which have been banned from sale to China under export controls. Any sale of these servers requires a strict review process, including on-site checks by company staff for purchases of more than eight units.
The defendants allegedly created fake websites and falsified information to evade export restrictions, with 74 servers successfully delivered to China via various routes. The attempt involving 56 servers failed, and the servers remain in Taiwan.
Nvidia spokesperson Patrick Rutherford stated that the company will work with Taiwanese authorities to resolve the allegations 'as quickly as possible'. Super Micro said it cooperated with the authorities and would continue to enhance its export compliance program to protect American innovation.
