Taiwan Futures Plunge Over 2% Amid Escalating Geopolitical Tensions
The Taiwan Index Futures market experienced a dramatic divergence from Wall Street's rally on Friday. While U.S. stocks closed broadly higher, fueled by Amazon's stellar earnings report, Taiwan's futures market plummeted 1,077 points, or 2.46%, to close at 42,650.
The sharp sell-off was primarily driven by profit-taking after the day session surged more than 3,100 points on Friday, compounded by escalating Middle East tensions that triggered a rebound in oil prices and heightened risk-aversion sentiment.
From a technical perspective, although Taiwan's stock market rebounded strongly to reclaim short-term moving averages, the rally occurred on shrinking volume, indicating a fragile structure.
The stark divergence between the cash and futures markets, as well as between Taiwan and U.S. equities, introduces significant uncertainty for Taiwan's market open next Monday.
