Tavneos Recall Hits Ireland Amid Safety Concerns
A drug used to treat rare autoimmune diseases has been recalled from shelves in the Republic of Ireland. Tavneos (Avacopan) is made by Amgen and is sold by partner pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
In May, Kissei reported 20 deaths among over 8,500 patients treated with Tavneos since 2022. It's unclear if the drug directly caused these deaths; Amgen says external factors include cases where a causal relationship couldn't be determined.
The European Medicines Agency recommended stripping market authorisation in July, and the European Commission endorsed this recommendation earlier this month.
