A recent tax scam has been targeting victims in various parts of Canada, leaving them to buy credit cards at Home Depot.

According to reports, the scam involves a phishing email or phone call that convinces the victim they owe taxes and need to pay immediately. The scammers then instruct the victim to purchase gift cards from major retailers, including Home Depot, and provide the card numbers over the phone.

Victims are often told to buy credit cards with high balances, reportedly worth between $5,000 to $10,000. Once the victim complies, the scammer allegedly uses the card details to drain the account or sell the gift cards for cash.

The scammers' motives remain unclear, but experts warn of potential identity theft and financial loss for those targeted.
