Taylor Emphasizes Learning, Humility, and Empathy as Key Leadership Traits
David Taylor, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, shared his experience and insights with students at Elon University's Martha and Spencer Love School of Business. Taylor spent over 40 years at P&G, holding various roles across the globe before becoming chairman, president, and CEO.
He emphasized the importance of learning and humility in leadership, sharing how he moved into marketing after being told he needed to learn about building brands. This experience taught him the value of putting aside ego and being open to growth.
Taylor stressed that what matters most is not where you start, but how you approach your first assignment. He advised students to focus on delivering excellence in their work, which will create credibility and eventually allow them to take on more significant challenges and influence the organization.
When discussing artificial intelligence, Taylor noted that while technology can accelerate certain processes, it's essential to understand the people a business serves. He shared examples from P&G's market research, highlighting the importance of empathy and understanding consumers' needs beyond what they say.
