Tech Firms Warn of Imminent AI-Powered Cyberattacks on Critical Infrastructure
Over 100 companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Microsoft, have issued a joint warning that AI-powered cyberattacks on critical infrastructure are imminent. The letter emphasizes that these attacks will become more widespread and sophisticated in the coming months.
The signatory list includes prominent tech firms such as Google, AWS, Cloudflare, Palo Alto Networks, Okta, Fortinet, Visa, Mastercard, Capital One, Adobe, Oracle, IBM, Cisco, General Motors, and Shopify. They're urging governments to take immediate action to coordinate cyber defense efforts from local to international levels.
The companies are also pushing for increased funding of essential services that lack staff or budget. This includes providing hospitals and water utilities with access to defensive AI and hands-on support through trusted providers. Governments are being asked to impose costs on attackers, which is a straightforward ask but requires significant investment in local systems.
