Tech Giants' Balance Sheets Put to the Test Amidst AI Spending Binge

The balance sheets of major tech companies have been scrutinized to determine their ability to absorb an AI shock. The review found that Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon are well-equipped to handle such a scenario, but Oracle's finances are more precarious.

Microsoft has $20.9 billion in cash equivalents, $55.9 billion in short-term investments, and only $40.3 billion in debt. This balance sheet is considered stable and can absorb any potential financial shocks. Alphabet also has a substantial cushion with $242.5 billion of liquid assets, although about $80 billion of it is invested in Space Exploration Technologies stock.

Amazon's balance sheet may seem concerning at first glance due to its $133 billion in long-term debt exceeding the company's $123 billion in cash and short-term investments. However, Amazon generates a significant amount of operating cash flow, which can cover its borrowings. Meta Platforms also has a slim margin with only $6.6 billion of net cash separating it from financial difficulties.

On the other hand, Oracle has the thinnest cash reserve among the hyperscalers, with $31.3 billion in cash and short-term investments but $122.3 billion in debt. This leaves Oracle's balance sheet vulnerable to potential financial shocks.
