Tech Giants' Balance Sheets Put to the Test: Can They Absorb AI Shocks?
When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI) spending, several tech giants are investing heavily. But can they absorb financial shocks if their AI bets take longer than expected to pay off? An analysis of the balance sheets of Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Oracle reveals that some companies have a more comfortable cushion against market shifts.
Microsoft stands out with its robust balance sheet, boasting about $36.5 billion in net cash and no asterisks, according to the analysis. Alphabet has the largest reserves but roughly $80 billion is restricted SpaceX stock rather than deployable cash.
Amazon carries a small net debt, but its annual operating cash flow of around $161 billion makes it more convenient to issue bonds. Meta Platforms looks strong at first glance but has only about $6.6 billion in net cash standing between it and financial difficulties.
Oracle's balance sheet is the thinnest among the group, with a debt balance of over $122.3 billion and roughly $97.6 billion in net debt. The company is trying creative financing tactics to make up for its weak cash-to-debt balance.
