Tech Giants Face Off with Publishers Over AI Copyright Infringement
OpenAI and Microsoft have faced opposition from news publishers over their use of copyrighted materials to train large language models. In motions for summary judgment, OpenAI and Microsoft argued that years of discovery have failed to find evidence of actual market harm caused by AI-driven copyright infringement.
The companies claimed that using copyrighted books and news articles to train their models is fair use, despite the concerns raised by publishers about the potential loss of licensing fees, traffic, and the replacement of journalism with AI-generated content.
However, the news publishers countered that the harm is already evident in the form of AI companies dodging licensing fees and siphoning off traffic from their websites.
