Tech Giants Rename Lake Ontario to Lake America Amid US-Canada Trade War
Silicon Valley tech giants Apple and Google have complied with an executive order from President Trump to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America. The decision, announced last week, affects only U.S. users of their map services.
According to the White House, this move is part of President Trump's efforts to protect American industries and workers in the escalating U.S.-Canada trade war. Apple and Google have not commented on the matter.
However, MapQuest, another navigation app, has refused to rename Lake Ontario, citing its long-standing policy of maintaining familiar names for users. The company saw a surge in usage since Thursday, with over 1.5 million installs of their app.
The move is seen as an attempt by Silicon Valley companies to forge a more cordial relationship with the President after publicly pushing back against him on issues such as immigration during his first term.
