Tech Giants Take Aim at Space with Multi-Billion Dollar Investments
SpaceX's stock price has been as volatile as its rocket launches. The company went public at $135 per share, quickly surged to over $200, and then dipped back down to $110 in a matter of weeks.
The recent Q2 13F filings revealed that major tech companies like Nvidia, Alphabet (Google), and AMD have taken significant equity stakes in SpaceX. Nvidia holds around 122.8 million shares, valued at approximately $21 billion, while AMD has a smaller stake of 3.3 million shares worth about $565 million.
This investment trend suggests that space is no longer just a speculative side-theme but an integral part of the AI hardware ecosystem. The tech giants are exploring orbital compute nodes, satellite communications, and edge-data processing to support SpaceX's AI initiatives and Starlink satellite constellation.
However, this also creates a 'feedback loop' where if space stocks experience a sector-wide correction, it can negatively impact Big Tech balance sheets and tech index funds. This could lead to a ripple effect in the stock market, making it challenging for investors to diversify their portfolios.
