Tech Giants Unite Against AI-Powered Threats
More than 100 tech companies, including giants like Google and OpenAI, have joined forces to sound the alarm on the growing threat of AI-powered attacks. In an open letter signed by numerous prominent players in the industry, they warn that existing cybersecurity measures will be insufficient against increasingly sophisticated AI-driven threats. The signatories, which include Anthropic, AWS, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, IBM, Mastercard, Oracle, and Visa among others, are urging businesses and governments to take immediate action to strengthen critical infrastructure protection.
The letter highlights the vulnerability of systems due to unpatched vulnerabilities, excessive permissions, incorrect configurations, weak authentication, and outdated software. The authors argue that AI could accelerate the discovery and exploitation of such issues by attackers, but also help defenders identify and rectify them more quickly.
As a result, companies are advised to prioritize cybersecurity for senior management, review access rights, update outdated systems, and raise standards for both purchased and in-house software. Security solution providers are urged to continuously test their products against state-of-the-art models, incorporate AI tools into them, and share threat intelligence.
Furthermore, governments are encouraged to fund cyber defence for organisations lacking staff and budget, as well as expand trusted access programmes that would allow critical infrastructure operators to access powerful defence models and expert support.
