The tech industry is shifting towards a new power standard for AI data centers, which requires more energy than current systems can handle. To overcome this limitation, companies like NVIDIA, Google, and Microsoft are working together to adopt 800 VDC (volt DC) power distribution. This move will allow for higher power densities and improved efficiency.

The Open Compute Project has partnered with these tech giants to create an open and standardized power architecture for AI data centers. The group aims to make it easy for suppliers to build interoperable products, which will help the industry scale up its AI infrastructure while maintaining flexibility in real-world deployments.

One key component of this transition is the Solid-State Transformer (SST) Specification v0.3, developed through collaboration among Microsoft, Google, NVIDIA, and other stakeholders. The SST is a critical piece of the 800 VDC power distribution system, simplifying the pathway from grid to rack.

NVIDIA's Vera Rubin Ultra GPU platform, set to arrive in 2027, will be one of the first to support 800 VDC infrastructure, enabling power densities of up to 600 kilowatts per rack. This shift is expected to bring a 5% improvement in power efficiency and cooling benefits as power infrastructure moves outside the rack.

The transition to 800 VDC is not a replacement for existing AC infrastructure but rather an additional deployment option that can coexist with existing systems, allowing for a gradual transition as AI power density continues to increase.
